Maria and family were moved into the
Kisvardo ghetto. She had wanted
to emigrate to the U S, her religious
husband thought it too secular.
In May, ordered to prepare for travel
she bought food, even ham
though forbidden by Jewish law. No one
knew the length nor destination.
When Maria Katz left on her journey
with children in tow, distrusting
Nazis, she still felt good would prevail.
Somehow, they all would survive.
Three days later, the boxcars were opened---
they had arrived in Auschwitz.
